Samui Training Center Opens First-of-its-kind It Training Facility Earlier this week, Training Center spokesperson and technology veteran Paul Valente announced the opening of the fledgling training giant's IT training facility. The facility will initially offer instructor-led vendor-approved courses geared towards obtaining popular IT certifications such as MCSE, and CompTIA Linux+, but will later extend to include seminars on IT outsourcing and executive level business communications. Because of its remote, tropical location, the opening of the facility marks the company's first pioneering step in developing the world's growing travel-to-train IT training and certification market."We've all seen the same market indicators," said Valente when asked about the company's unique approach, "we have just chosen a different response." According to Valente, in an industry where careers look perhaps less attractive and more challenging than they once were, IT training companies have focused on trying to cut the cost of training an individual student to an absolute minimum, in order to remain competitive.According to Valente this has resulted in there being "simply nothing left worth buying" from your typical "McDonald's brand" IT training vendor. "Why not just buy a book?" says Valente, bluntly. While web based training methods entice the student to make a purchase thinking they will get more for less, unfortunately all too often the huge cost savings afforded the training provider do not find their way to the student and the IT student's value to business fails to increase significantly as a result of their online training. As businesses race to outsource their technology initiatives and the IT training industry focuses on web and online based delivery methods, it may seam strange that Training Center is offering instructor-led courses targeted at students from all hemispheres looking to boost their technology careers and travel."What STC offers is an educational experience," says Valente, "a chance to expand technical ability and value, create business and technology
Adventures in Radio Episode 85 - Rocky Jordan The second run of Rocky Jordan is now based in Cairo instead of Istanbul when A Man Named Jordan was heard over the air. Jack Moyles (right) still stars. The new series had more of a detective feel to it than the first run. The sites and sounds heard in the series were very reminiscent of a Cairo street and the excellent scripts provided for some very well produced episodes. Adventures in Radio Episode 84 - A Man Named Jordan A look at an intriguing adventure serial that attempted to sound as authentic as its Istanbul locale would allow. Initially a five-times-a-week adventure, it later became a weekly detective oriented serial moving the locale from Istanbul to Cairo. Throughout the series, Jack Moyles right) starred as Rocky. Adventures in Radio Episode 79 - Hollywood Star Playhouse This week our adventure takes us out of this world as we hear a science fiction story from a top notch series called Hollywood Star Playhouse. The one you'll hear this week is from Suspense. Adventures in Radio Episode 77 - Suspense This week our adventure takes us to the high Sierra Mountains in 1846 and the cold freezing climes of the Donner Pass. An excellent tale from director and producer Elliott Lewis and Suspense. Adventures in Radio Episode 76 - The Aldrich Family The week's adventure takes us to the comedy genre. A look at one of the earliest sitcoms on radio - The Aldrich Family starring Ezra Stone (right) as Henry Aldrich, a typical teenage boy. A timeless series that still provokes much laughter today.Music under is "Take It Easy" by The Gabor Bolla Quartet on the Podshow Music Network. Adventures in Radio Episode 75 - The Columbia Workshop The prestigious and highly experimental radio series from CBS under the direction of Irving Reis produced some excellent drama. This week a look at how time and the telephone is intertwined to produce a suspense story about death and sadness. Ironically, the telephone like the radio brought people together though radio was much more comprehensive. A first rate production. Adventures in Radio Episode 74 - Escape Escape with us now as we follow a Navy flyer who crash lands on a remote island in the Pacific only to be swept into a strange world in which he is thrust into the future. This play is based on a short story by Science Fiction writer Nelson Bond (right). Music under is Pearls Before Swine - "Another Time" Adventures in Radio Episode 73 - Lights Out A Halloween scary story! Lights Out was one of the best horror radio dramas ever produced. Be sure to listen to this one in the dark and alone!Music under is the theme from Dark Shadows. Adventures in Radio Episode 72 - Crime Classics In the fifties sponsors were abandoning network radio drama in droves. Because the networks sustained (paid for) many of the programs they were broadcasting, a new sense of creative freedom took hold. During this time, many excellent series were heard. One was produced by actor, writer, director Elliott Lewis (right) called Crime Classics. A bit tongue-in-cheek, this series was well written and acted. This week, I'll look at a more dramatic one from that series.Music under is Baroki by Kila . Adventures in Radio Episode 71 - Inner Sanctum Mystery One of the most notable horror radio series was created by Himan Brown and initially starred Raymond Edward Johnson as the host, "Raymond." Adventures in Radio Episode 69 - Radio in Transition - The Lone Ranger A long episode: what happens if the leading actor in a radio series, who has a distinctive voice and devoted listenership, is suddenly killed in an accident? Back in 1941, radio was live and such an event could be catastrophic. It happened to Earl Graser (right), who was tragically killed in a single car accident in 1941, Graser was the distinctive voice of The Lone Ranger. Suddenly a scramble was on to replace him. Adventures in Radio Episode 68 - Radio Noir #2 Part 2 of our look at Radio Noir. Several ultimately became full blown radio series. This week, a look at the "suspense" entry of Forecast - Marie Belloc-Lowndes' "The Lodger" starring Herbert Marshall (right) and Edmund Gwenn and directed by Alfred Hitchcock in his only directorial appearance on dramatic radio. Adventures in Radio Episode 63 - The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse In 1938 Warner Brothers released a film based on the play by Barre Lyndon and called "The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse." The film starred Edward G. Robinson and in a supporting role, Humphrey Bogart. The first two appearances of the story appeared on radio in 1941 and 1944. But in 1947, a longer slightly different version was broadcast over the radio program Studio One starring Paul Muni (right). This week a look at that broadcast.Music under commentary is by Chillerstadt called Seven Eleven from the Podshow Music Network. Adventures in Radio Episode 62 - Orson Welles as The Shadow Continuing a look at the genius of Orson Welles, I look at probably his most public role on radio as Lamont Cranston and The Shadow. Adventures in Radio Episode 59 - Fred Allen An all new podcast! This week's podcast looks at the career of the dean of radio comedy/satire - Fred Allen. Allen's career was virtually all radio once he left the comedy stage behind. Not only was radio Allen's medium, it was that medium that held onto him so fiercely that he could never move into television as did his counterparts like Jack Benny. This podcast will look at his Linit Bath Club Revue, Hour of Smiles, Town Hall Tonight and his final series on radio, The Fred Allen Show. Adventures in Radio Episode 12....Harry Lime Repeat episode from August 2005."That was the shot that killed Harry Lime. He died in a sewer beneath
Vienna...Yes that was the end of Harry Lime, but it was not the
beginning. Harry Lime had many lives." Radio Adventures looks at "The
Lives of Harry Lime" on this week's podcast. Episode: Ticket to Tangier" Adventures in Radio Episode 16 - Night Beat Repeat performance (September 2005) while I take some time off.One of the best well written but darker radio series was Night Beat starring Frank Lovejoy. The story revolved around reporter Randy Stone and the seamier night side of Chicago as he looked for his nightly story. Here is one of the best written gritty, solid, of the streets drama. Adventures in Radio Episode 58 - The Radio Guild One of NBC Radio's premier series was not even sponsored! The Radio Guild was an experimental series broadcasting Shakespeare as well as original radio material. One of the programs that offered quality drama was "The Ineffable Essence of Nothing" written by Ranald R. MacDougall (right).Final episode of "Clan of the Fiery Cross"I will be taking a couple of weeks off putting repeat podcasts here until I return. Adventures in Radio Episode 57 - A Sound of Thunder This week a look at one of the better known short stories from the pen of Ray Bradbury. The story spawned not only a radio play, but a couple of films, a television episode as well as rock song by a well known band from the eighties. All that and more with episode 15 of the "Clan of the Fiery Cross."Background music by Human Response and Claire Fitch from Magnatunes. Adventures in Radio Episode 56 - Escape: Three Skeleton Key A bookend complement to the Escape episode of "Leiningen Versus the Ants" this production of "Three Skeleton Key" is one of the best. It is difficult not to be over the top in this radio play, but Vincent Price seems to find a happy mediumas those around him slowly go mad. The special effects by Cliff Thorsness make this one of the most horrific episodes from the long running series.Episode 14 of "Clan of the Fiery Cross" from The Adventures of Superman. Adventures in Radio Episode 55 - Quiet, Please A special look at the talent of one of the greatest radio writers. Wyllis Cooper was noted more for his creations than his skill as a writer and director. This week, a special look at one of his Quiet, Please episodes and how he builds the sense of fear or discomfort in his stories. The episode is based upon Maurice Ravel's solo piano piece: Pavanne for A Dead Princess. Also episode 13 of "Clan of the Fiery Cross." Adventures in Radio Episode 54 - Adventures of Superman To cover while I am taking a much needed vacation, two episodes of "Clan of the Fiery Cross" from the Adventures of Superman. This will take us up through episode 12 of 16 in this series that attacks hatred and racism - tough themes for a late forties kid's show. Adventures in Radio Episode 53 - CBS Radio Workshop This week the adventure takes us to another world where earthmen land on a planet in the middle of a dispute between two societies. The problem is that the intelligent life is not humanoid, but rather vegetable and the two societies are the Carrots and the Onions!A hilarious satire on human society by novelist Robert Nathan in his original story for the CBS Radio Workshop and called "A Pride of Carrots." This episode is "Algiers" with Charles Boyer and Heddy Lamar.Episode 9 of the "Clan of the Fiery Cross" Adventures in Radio Episode 51 - The Ford Theater A rather long podcast this week as I look at big budget radio programs. The dramas cast big name talent and ran for sixty minutes with minimal commercial time. Episode 8 of "The Clan of the Fiery Cross." Adventures in Radio Episode 50 - Damon Runyon A look at the literary figure Damon Runyon and how the Damon Runyon Theatre came to radio. Runyon characters were so well drawn as to spawn the term Runyonesque. The Damon Runyon Theatre was a delightful series.Episode seven of the "Clan of the Fiery Cross" from The Adventures of Superman. Adventures in Radio Episode 49 - Suspense I continue my theme of famous author's whose works were adapted for radio. Continuing with the impact of crime writer Cornell Woolrich, the father of noir fiction, a look at possibly one of the best adaptations of one of his works. "The Black Curtain" was a flawed novel that made it to both film as well as radio - at least once on Suspense.Episode 6 of The Adventures of Superman and its attack on the Ku Klux Klan with "Clan of the Fiery Cross." Adventures in Radio Episode 48 - Cornell Woolrich Continuing with our famous authors whose works were adapted for radio - Cornell Woolrich, considered the father of noir fiction, was one of the most adapted authors. We'll listen to one of his adapted short stories from the Screen Directors Playhouse.Episode 5 of the "Clan of the Fiery Cross." Adventures in Radio Episode 47 - Escape / Adv. of Superman Beginning this week: a look at radio adaptations of works by famous authors. First up is Joseph Conrad whose short story "The Brute" was featured on the CBS series Escape in 1948. Conrad was best known for his themes of isolation, fear, madness and introspection. This week's episode from Escape fits those themes as you find yourself aboard a killer ship from which there is no Escape!Episode 4 of the "Clan of the Fiery Cross" on the Adventures of Superman. Adventures in Radio Episode 46 - The Whistler/ Adv. of Superman A radio series that was created after the model of The Shadow was The Whistler. Running over radio for about ten years, there were at least six Whistler characters though Bill Forman (right) was the longest running Whistler. The Whistler was the voice of conscience and fate. A dark dis-embodied character who while he had no physical presence in the radio plays, he was very much a part of the episodes. Also, another series run with a conscience - episode three of the "Clan of the Fiery Cross" from the Adventures of Superman. Adventures in Radio Episode 45 - Adventures of Superman In the mid-forties, a popular juvenile radio series, the Adventures of Superman, seemed to suddenly develop a conscience and began to prove to critics that commercial and community interests could come together for the greater good.
A look at one theme during the run of this marvelous series as Kelloggs and the producers took on the Ku Klux Klan in their series run "Clan of the Fiery Cross."
Superman image (c) DC Comics Adventures in Radio Episode 44 - Suspense A look at the radio writing of John Dickson Carr, noted mystery writer from the forties who also wrote original radio scripts for Suspense and the BBC's Appointment With Fear. This week's episode is "Cabin B-13."
The final episode of the I Love A Mystery serial "Temple of Vampires." Adventures in Radio Episode 43 - Radio City Playhouse Continuing to focus on some of radio's better writers, a look at Ernest Kinoy (right). Kinoy's name is best known from Dimension X and X Minus One but his work goes well beyond that in radio as you can hear in this podcast. He is an award winning television writer known for Roots, Victory at Entebbe and Skokie.
Episode 19 of the 20 part serial "Temple of Vampires." Adventures in Radio Episode 42 - Cavalcade of America This week the adventure focuses on the outstanding writing talent of one particular writer whose fame is actually from another medium. relationships and put it in a context that applies to businesses who are looking to capitalize through technology enabled global business strategies."Samui Training Center's efforts to create an IT training facility in a tropical paradise had previously been thwarted by such region's usual lack of access to reliable electrical, Internet and communications infrastructure. With the recent construction of the Information Technology Complex near Lamai Beach on the popular island paradise of Koh Samui, Training Center has finally found what they've been looking for.The island of Koh is less than one hour from Bangkok International Airport by airplane and--made popular a decade ago by the novel The Beach and later by the nearby island of Koh Phangan's Full-moon Party--is one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations for travelers wishing to relax on the beach, swim, dive, snorkel or spa. The giant, totally-IT, air-conditioned monolith is on Island's main road fifteen minutes from the island's second most popular beach and has everything expected of a top-notch training facility. "Even if you offer the best accommodations package in the world at the lowest price, you can't have a technical training center without redundant power and high-speed Internet," says Valente, standing outside the facility in the hot sun.But students won't brave the high seas for high speed Internet and redundant power. Training Center anticipates training many students from the America's and Europe who want to get away, see the world and come back ready for a new job or better equipped and more valuable to their old job. Students from Asia will come because they want a better education and don't want to travel far out of the region to get it. Many will come for the great vacation and to look for global business opportunities as well.More information on Training Center and the new facility can be found at www.samuitech.com..
